Summer Art Camp for Children Ages 6 - 12

Week 1: Multi-Media Adventures June 30 - July 3

Discover and develop creativity through exciting drawing and painting activities that celebrate the work of favorite artists. Come explore the museum, and create your own original masterpiece!
Week 2: Let's Do Summer! July 7 - 11

Multi-media flowers, sun, gardens! Children will celebrate summer and express themselves with lots of color using tissue paper, neon, fluorescent and acrylic paints along with watercolors.
Week 3: Drawing and Painting July 14 - 18

Children will view work by Van Gogh, Picasso, Renoir and Monet, and then draw/paint their own version of one of the artist's works. Watercolors, poster paint, acrylic paint, cray pas and various other mediums will be used for their compositions.
Week 4: Ocean Explorers July 21 - 25

Travel to the depths of the ocean flooor where creatures lurk and mermaids sing. Artists will use their flippers to dive into a variety of exciting art materials and let their imaginations sail away on a creative adventure.
Week 5: It's Beach Time! July 28 - August 1

Inspired by summer near the beach, make sculpture, weaving, collage, fish prints and paintings using tissue paper, paint, sand, shells and other wonderful materials!
Week 6: Castles, Gnome Homes & Fairy Houses August 4 - 8

Imagine an enchanted world in the hidden corners of the forest. Young artists will combine paper mache, natural materials, jazzy embellishments and a sprinkle of magic dust to create a whimsical world for fairies and gnomes to cast their spells.
Week 7: Oodles of Materials August 11 - 15

Experience an art adventure using oodles of materials! Children will experiment with various paints as well as beads, feathers, glitter, pipe cleaners and more to make masks, sculptures, self-portraits, collages and weavings.
Week 8: Lights, Camera, Action! August 18 - 22

Let your child take center stage as we recreate a favorite tale. Budding artists, actors and stage crew design costumes, create props and scenery, and bring famous characters to life. Parents and friends are invited for the final performance on the last day of class. Prepare yourself for a fantastic theatrical adventure!

Due to the extra time needed for firing and glazing of clay objects, students may need to return at a later date to pick up finished ceramic work.

Week 1: The Stone Age June 30 - July 3
Members: $145 Non-members: $170
Earth, water and fire: origins of ceramics (Marajo Island, Brazil and Zapotec, Mexico). Create small-scale animals and people out of clay. Handbuilding techniques: pinch, coil and press clay to create functional containers. Emphasis is on geometric designs and texture.
Week 2: Tiles From Around the World July 7 - 11
Members: $175 Non-members: $200
Carve architectural images such as castles, mosques and cathedrals from a country of choice on clay tiles and decorate with designs and colors.
Week 3: Middle East July 14 - 18
Members: $175 Non-members: $200
Create a beautiful bowl using a specific hand building technique. Animal patterns, designs and texture will complete this very interesting piece.
Week 4: Japan July 21 - 25
Members: $175 Non-members: $200
Students will have a choice of creating a set of Japanese tea cups or a large-scale vessel using a unique decorative design known as cord-created patterns (Jomon ware).
Week 5: Liberia July 28 - Aug 1
Members: $175 Non-members: $200
Mano Storage pots (c. 1930-50). White clay hand-rubbed with powdered charcoal, beeswax and palm oil; designs incised with one’s own jewelry. Use anything to create interesting designs, patterns and texture on a very unique clay pot.
Week 6: Egypt / Africa Aug 4 - 8
Members: $175 Non-members: $200
Students will explore a primitive method of creating and firing clay (smoke fired). Clay slabs, writing tablets and universal containers will be used like traditional communication purposes including cultural signs and symbols.
Week 7: Greece Aug 11 - 15
Members: $175 Non-members: $200
Greek vessels with an Olympic theme. Hear a story about an important sporting event depicted on a Greek-style vessel. Using a specialized “glazing” technique (terra sigillata- “sealed earth”), students will create modern games on a clay vessel using this traditional process.
Week 8: Jewelry Aug 18 - 22
Members: $175 Non-members: $200
Several cultures identified themselves by the jewelry they wore. Create interesting and unique jewelry that fits your style and individual preferences. Beads, pendants and other
accessories will be used to complete beautiful pieces to keep for yourself or give as gifts.
