Cape Cod Museum of Art Celebrates 30th Anniversary

In its 30th anniversary year, the Cape Cod Museum of Art is celebrating three decades of bringing art and education to the region. During this time, the museum has become an avid advocate of the arts – featuring the vibrant work of contemporary artists and highlighting our rich cultural heritage with exhibitions of notable artists whose reputations extend beyond the Cape.
With its mission to collect, conserve, study, interpret, and exhibit works by the outstanding artists associated with our region, the museum is committed to exploring and preserving the artistic legacy of the area and to fostering artistic and cultural growth of the audience and the community. Its extensive education program, with workshops and courses for adults and art camp for children and a number of school-associated programs, extends the reach of the museum further into the community.
Founded to serve our region by highlighting the artists and the many creative people in the area, the museum has grown into a facility with seven climate-controlled galleries, an auditorium, screening room, sculpture garden, museum shop, administrative offices, conference room, library, art storage for the permanent collection, and the Weny Education Center.
The museum membership has increased in number to more than 1,700, and our interest is to expand our membership and continue to add ever more innovative and exciting exhibitions and programs.
In celebration of these 30 years, the museum has planned an illuminating program of events and exhibitions during the year. Included are several major shows this summer. An exhibition of Provincetown art, related to the publication of the two-volume edition of Deborah Forman’s Perspectives on the Provincetown Art Colony, will highlight the contributions of national and international as well as regional artists who gathered in this quaint fishing village at the tip of Cape Cod, which the National Trust for Historic Preservation called “home of the nation’s oldest art colony.”
An exhibit of the work of Varujan Boghosian and Ed Giobbi, who have strong connections to the Provincetown art colony, will bring together two notable artists who were members of the illustrious Long Point Gallery in Provincetown. And in August, Osterville artist Matthew Schulz will exhibit his light-filled landscapes.
Other highlights of the year include a 30th Anniversary Reception and the third annual golf tournament, The Art of Golf at The Club in Yarmouthport at Kings Way off Route 6A. Family Day in July is an annual event that attracts hundreds for fun, workshops, and entertainment.
The annual gala and auction in August will include special features in recognition of the museum’s anniversary. New this year is Cape Art Blooms, which will launch the museum’s autumn season. Floral designers will bring together nature’s color and forms in arrangements that will creatively respond to a piece of art on exhibit. In November to extend our love of art to the written word, we are planning an event with local authors. We will conclude the year with a special holiday party in December and the commitment to take our energy and innovations into the next decade.
